HOW TO MAKE LOVE.
2 FILMMAKERS 2 CAMERAS 2 ACTORS 1 SCRIPT.

Writing this screenplay I knew every word was going to count. Both in front and behind the camera it was practicing the art of limitation– really understanding the value of each word. The characters were going to find themselves in a highly critical relationship. They were going to be frowned upon if you don’t unfold their story correctly. France is very forgiving with this sort of situation. So by placing the characters in this setting, by choosing a hyper-romantic look–I was hoping to disarm any judgement from the very beginning. I wanted the viewer to get on their trip and just go. I didn’t want anyone to bring their baggage.

When your in love there is no direction. Everything and nothing makes sense at the same time. I wanted the second act to reflect what it felt to be in love– the weightlessness, the euphoria — the way one can become lost. To get that across in the second act I had to bookend it with a the first and third act that had more traditional structures.

Ultimately. I wanted to write a move about being in love rather than falling in love. Where after a thousand kisses it still feels like the first one. I certainly hope those who have been in love can relate.

ITS A MOVIE ABOUT BEING IN LOVE NOT FALLING IN LOVE.

The concept behind For Lovers Only was to photograph an intimate movie with only 2 actors in a run-n-gun style. This would also help capture the emotion that I wanted between the two characters. With today’s technology we were able to strip the production down to its bare essentials– just a camera. I would operate the Canon 5D camera and record a love affair on a very personal level. No lights, no crew, no budget… Nothing invasive to disturb the process. I didn’t want the actors to know I was present in any environment. I wanted to capture their whispers. As the title of the movie suggests, so was the way we made my favorite movie to date. You have to love movie-making in a way that only lovers know.
